WI State Senate Bill SB 388

By: In: The Sharp Edge

Wisconsin Outdoor Fun notices Wisconsin State Senate activity related to skiing:

State lawmakers are working on new rules that will limit liability for owners and operators of downhill and Nordic ski areas.

I read WI SB 388 over quickly and without lawyer training, but most of the bill was fairly easy to read. What is The Wisconsin Skier’s opinion? Read on.

Love the Season You Are With

By: In: The Last Ride

Being an avid skier be sure I am completely okay with Winter and all it brings.

I can not say winter is all peaches but I do not mind it so much, in fact, that is one of the reasons I took up skiing. I do not like the reduced sunshine, I do not like driving on snow and ice, and I do not like shoveling and blowing our driveway and walkways.

However, obviously I like skiing, I like having “Up North” to ourselves, and I like the idea of being a contrarian.

However, I detest the gripes and whines others have about Winter. Look, if you detest the wintry climate then move! There are many states that have milder or even no winters, as the song goes: If you can not be with the one you love, love the one you are with. So too with the seasons.

Schussing the News March 1, 2012

By: In: News, Skiing
  1. Rocky Mountain High and we are not talking about the altitude here. Hidden “speakeasies” for smoking the ganja at ski resorts.
  2. A fascinating article on ski history featuring D’ann Duft

Like this winter’s snow, not a whole lot to talk about.

Ski Rental Experience

By: In: Equipment, Skiing

Wow! I had to rent skis this weekend, and am glad I did!

I got off of the lift on the first run, and laid into them to turn and all of a sudden SWING! Those skis turned instantly and tightly! Loved it, they were Rossignols in 170cm length. I liked it and this is got me a lot more interested in upgrading my boards.

Skiing on Mud

By: In: Skiing

This weekend I was skiing with friends and family at Indianhead Mountain and at Blackjack.

Saturday was a good day, with lots of fresh snow and for the most of the day the snow continued to fall. I like it but it is a head game, I have to get my head right to ski it properly and break out of that defensive mode. Lots of fluffencrud, cut up fresh snow that is not hard enough to push back seriously but causes enough irregularity to make skiing a challenge.

However, the next day was interesting. The weather was at or below freezing and as I noted the snow really never let up, but the next day the snow conditions were of warm spring snow. More curiously, the snow all had a light brown tint to it. It was slow and grabby, I would be skiing and the snow was causing me to work hard to keep my fore-aft balance. You know the schtick, a pile of slow snow grabs your boards and you pitch forward and then you get back into faster snow and your legs are working to keep you out of the backseat.

I was not the only one to notice, talking with others about this it was apparent everyone was making the same observations as I was.

Then we see this:

Duluth, MN (Northland’s NewsCenter) – Is the snow brown in your town? Reports have come in that brown dust is falling along with the snow from Duluth to Knife River to Alborn. Chief Meteorologist Adam Clark found the reason: “Dust showed up in Kansas on visible satellite about 1-2 days ago. The thought is that the dust got wrapped up into our current low and created our dirty snow.

I have seen this before and at Blackjack too! However, there was some serious late spring skiing conditions on too, but that same brown tint to the snow was also present.

Little Swizerland To Reopen!

By: In: News, Resorts, Skiing

Great news:

Our sister hill Little Switzerland in Slinger, WI will be reopening next season. “Like” Little Switzerland’s facebook page so we can keep you updated on the progress. Click Here for info on Gold Passes which includes unlimited access to Blackjack Resort, Little Switzerland & Nordic Mountain for next season!
http://www.skiblackjack.com/rates/season_passes

I thought the place was closed for good and was bought out by some environmental group who were letting the place go back to nature, well I’m glad the Nordic-BlackJack group is resurrecting the place! I am happy to be adding pins (back) to the Wisconsin Skier Map!

Another Sony A55 Crticism

By: In: Media, Photography

As I have noted on this venue, I recently purchased a Sony A55 camera. I have been using it for a mix of still photography and video recording and this post focuses on the video recording aspect of the camera.

I really dislike the fact I can not fix the exposure when recording video. I suppose it is not a purpose-built video camera but trying to add the video to what is a purpose-built still photography camera. I guess I have to work with that weakness and or purchase a purpose-built video camera.

However, it appears most of those are (at least in the price range I am looking at) are also rather limited and come with lots of built-in assumptions I would be unable to override. Oh well.

Bode Miller’s Bansko Crash!

By: In: Competition, Skiing

Bode Miller is always interesting no matter what he is saying or doing. Even skiing you never know how it is going to end for Bode:

Video courtesy of Universal Sports:

Yes, he did officially complete the run, he avoided the dreaded DNF. Pay particular attention to the comments made by the commentators, wonder if that was a stock phrase (you will know which one) or if it was something he came up with at the moment. I guess not, the phrase refers to a skating move innovated by Dorothy Hamill.

Search Page Added!

By: In: Site Related

Finally, you have a page setup to search The Wisconsin Skier. Either pull it up via the page links on the right hand side (and under the advertisements) or simply visit: http://www.wi-ski.com/search/. I have run some tests on it and it has done good uncovering some posts I had written that I have completely forgotten about, that is, it does what I intend it to do.

The search does not utilize Google search and I may convert it to that in the future, but, searching this site just became a lot more convenient!
