Blackjack Slush Cup Action 2013

Slides from the Blackjack Slush Cup Action of 2013! My photos turned out okay, but nothing I consider a real wow.

Blackjack Slush Cup Action — Not the Right Weather

But yet the right weather. The weather was full on pure winter. Usually at this time of the year there are hints of spring, but not so this weekend UpNort or even at home. We had fresh snowfall at Blackjack and they left it on some runs fully wild and on others made an attempt at grooming. Needless to say the deep powder challenged our skiing ability, but that is a good thing, right?

Blackjack Slush Cup Action — Not the Right Weather

One member of my skiing group noted the slush cup participants were not very bright. I had to point out there probably was not a participant above 20 years of age, ahhh, the irrationality of youth!

Unfortunately, the best scenes occurred when I was not able to photograph them or I missed the shot due to poor technique. Again, this is all a learning experience. The weather made for less than great light, again the photographs turn out blah, but that of course is due to the blah weather. We only saw a small patch of clear blue sky that day, but we did see plenty of snow falling!

Blackjack Slush Cup Action — Tough Pond

The pond was longer than the last one I witnessed at Blackjack. Not a single snowboarder made it across and only three skiers made it across on the first run and two on the second. The snowboarders tended to fizzle out about half way across the pond and skiers too, of course the skiers sometimes would crash into the pond. This is too bad as the snowboarders can put on a great show when they get across.

Blackjack Slush Cup Action — More Coming!

I have more shots and as I edit them and select more worth publishing (and able to publish, see my comments about the age of the participants, if enough of their face is showing we can recognize them walking on the street I will be withholding publication) I will add them to the slideshow.

Did you witness any spring flings this last few weekends? Please share by offering up a comment!

The Snowman

The Wabeno Snowman

The Boyfriend of the Wabeno Mannequins

Check out this snowman! This snowman lives along HWY 32 near Wabeno, WI right across the road from the Wabeno Mannequins. The creator made the nose with a traffic cone and used tires to form the hat and eyes. I drive this route all that often anymore but I am glad I did of late.

In addition, this guy’s future is looking bright with more snow on the way!

The Day Dream Comes True

day dream

The Day I Have Been Dreaming of!

I captured this photo on Saturday March 2, 2013.

Day Dream — Sunny, Still, and Temperature in the Zone

Nothing was wrong with the weather. The sun was out, the air still, the temperature in the mid to upper 20s (around -3° C) just about perfect for snow riders. The snow was not sticky due to the temperature and was about as fast as it gets (a bit warmer would have added a bit more speed, but not a lot more). The snow was in good shape and the crowds were also just right.

Day Dream — The Crowd

Two Guys Riding up the Chair

Ski Brule was not crowded like it was last weekend and but it was not empty. I was skiing mostly by myself and got to meet a lot of neat folks. Lift lines were not usually long but I hit a few of them, probably after a stoppage.

Day Dream — I Was On!

My skiing was good that day. I spent about 2/3rds of the day skiing with my poles in my left hand and my camera in my right hand. I was filming most of the runs I made (at least until the battery died) and I came close to capturing a yard sale. I did catch the aftermath, but had I caught the crash it would have been super as the guy who crashed had a tumbling double ski release. However, I need to remember to point the camera down the slope and not perpendicular to plumb.

Holding the camera like I did gave me results with mostly showing the far horizon and the sky. I also need to stay tighter to the fall line and that wide traverses are not very interesting and the yard sale I talk about occurred during such a traverse (actually, I was skiing over to the left side of that trail and then I was going to seek the fall line again) and the crash was out of my lens at that time.

I took some still shots both with my camera (with kit lens with a polarizer) and my phone. The attached photo is from my camera and I changed the sweep orientation to portrait and swept Ski Brule in that fashion, I like the resultant image better.

The sweet snow

The Sweet Snow!

Ever wonder why I changed the color scheme? Blue, yellow, and white the colors I dream of!

If you are not a frequent skier, I suggest saving your money and ski at this time of the year rather than the holidays. Not only is the weather better, the snow deeper, the lift tickets cheaper, the lift lines shorter but there are more reasons to love March skiing.

Like many people who can not resist taking yet another photo of a sunset, I can not resist taking photos of and writing about these bluebird days.

Day Dream — How About YOU?

Leave a comment and share what you like about bluebird days? Perhaps share a memory or stories related to a beautiful day on the slopes.

The Blackjack Ski Resort

Blackjack Ski Resort!

Blackjack Ski Resort!

Welcome all, The Brave Ski Mom asked me about my favorite Midwestern ski resort and I chose that as Blackjack Mountain which is just across the border into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula along the HWY 51 corridor. I ski at this resort typically once or twice per year maybe more depending on many factors, namely how cheap they sell their season’s passes for which for the next snow season they are selling for $99 this month only.

So what about the skiing and the rest of the place?

Devil’s Head (@DevilsHead) Ski Resort Review

Devil's Head Review

Devil’s Head Review

Last weekend I skied Devil’s Head Ski Resort for the first time and this review presents some facts and my opinion and analysis of the resort.

Devil’s Head — The Riding

Very quickly, it was good.

The Snow

While snow quality depends heavily upon the weather there are things the resort can do to help out. There were a lot of people present and despite that the snow was in good shape, I did find some ice in what I would characterize in the usual places (center and at the top of the run) and I found ice only on one run. In any event my skiing that day was on and when I hit those patches I was moving out and laying my edges into the snow and did not much notice the ice. I want to stress again, skiing across isolated patches of ice is not a big deal as long as you are on edge. Strive to get ski on your edges and skid only when called for.

The snow across the runs was consistent and uniform and when I started skiing the hotter runs I found the snow a bit more fluffencruddy but that adds to the fun, right?

The Terrain

God organized the resort’s terrain very well almost by design or so it seems. Looking up the hill the easier terrain is to the left and the more advanced terrain is to the right. The black runs to the center and left are not (in my opinion) are not black runs but intermediate blues.

Once you start skiing to the middle and to the right of the resort the blacks become more true to their rating and I took one run that I thought about holding back on, only thought I did not. I did not get on the sole double-black but that is a long straight shot and gets its rating from its grade and its length, I did not ski on that.

One thing to note, they built a lot of rollers so if you want air that is easily available and if you do not you need to watch for that. I would traverse once or twice to bleed speed and then stand erect while cresting these rollers. The rollers go away and I would resume my normal attacking style. In addition, they do have jumps and launch points built on the sides of nearly every run, these are obvious and easy to avoid or hit depending on your whim.

The Lights

At Devil’s Head they offer a true eight-hour pass. You buy your pass at 11:00 am they let you ski until 7:00 pm. I found the lighting a bit spotty at first. On one run the top was lit, the bottom was lit and the middle was not until sometime later. I knew the run by this time so I knew of the rollers and their location. Once the lights were on, all was good! The runs at the far left of the resort are not lit so they close those runs at 4:00 pm, so if you arrive late you had better get over there quick.

The Lifts

Good, they have some quads, a triple seater, and some double chairs. None are of the high-speed variety but the large number of four seaters means they are able to move a lot of people up the hill. While there was a crowd on hand we never had any serious liftline waits. That was good. They do have some older two seaters on the resort and all in good operating condition.

The Staff?

I did not see too many ski patrollers present. I did see some but not as many as I would expect. However, I did see some in action doing the thing they do. The lift attendants did their job but were mostly incommunicative. In fact I had little interaction with staff while skiing.

Lindsey Vonn and Her Terrible Crash in Schladming

By: In: Competition, Media, News, Skiing

Lindsey Vonn

Lindsey Vonn

Lindsey Vonn’s crash rocked the FIS ski world. These snow athletes are the best in the world but even they go back and forth over the edge of control. One moment they are in control the next moment they are fighting to regain control. In Lindsey’s case things were going well and before she could do anything it was all over but the helicopter ride to the hospital.

I finally viewed the video of Lindsey Vonn’s crash on YouTube:

Lindsey Vonn — Crash Analysis

Lindsey is skiing well and has a narrow lead at the first split and about one-tenth of a second behind at the second split. However, there is a minor hiccup here and there in the skiing and then at 47 seconds she launches into the air and when she lands, her right leg crumples on impact. The reports have Lindsey tearing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), her medial cruciate ligament (MCL), and fracturing her tibia.

The ski then goes off on its own and torques her kneee, spins and tumbles her around, then both of her skis finally release, but the crash has done its damage. I have not seen anyone say with certainty what happened and the type of fracture she received is a lateral tibial plateau fracture which occurs in the upper part of the tibia just below the knee and SportsMD (http://www.sportsmd.com) says this about this kind of fracture:

How does a tibial plateau fracture occur?

Tibial plateau fractures occur by three main mechanisms. The first is by a medial or lateral based force (such as the so called “bumper fracture” when a car’s bumper strikes the outside of a person’s leg creating a valgus, or inward, force across the knee). The second mechanism is by a pure axial, or compressive force (such as a fall from height). [emphasis added] The third mechanism is by a combination of both axial and medial or lateral directed force.

That is, the impact of Lindsey landing broker her tibia and then the ski caught the edge and torqued her ACL nad MCL apart. When I see the crash that is my overwhelming thought, her tibia breaks and then the rest of the injuries happen. Hard to believe as Lindsey is well-known for her dedication to training and I am sure she is eating well, but that gives one an idea of the forces involved here.

The other possibility is the valgus force, but after watching the video I do not believe that is what happened, it appears she lands and then all support on the right side of her body is gone and she collapses over that lost right leg, but the right leg remains fairly straight, that is it does not appear as if there is any serious sideways forces to the knee at that immediate point.

Lindsey Vonn — the Aftermath

She has a long road ahead of her, especially if she wants to compete in the Sochi Olympics. However, she has the time and resources available to her to make that happen. I assume as soon as she can she will be seeing trainers and therapists to get her going again. Lindsey Vonn is going to amaze people!

Lindsey Vonn — and the Snark

I have seen some very snarky comments about her, read through the YouTube comments after the video I present. I think they are quite uncalled for but I see where they are coming from. Lindsey’s season was one of brash talk about joining the men’s circuit and then mixed results in the women’s racing prior her month break.

Lindsey Vonn — Fierce

Lindsey Vonn is a fierce competitor and this is not going to get in her way and she is also a seasoned skier and I believe she will be quite comfortable getting back into the starting house. Godspeed on yoru recovery Lindsey!

Update March 14, 2013 — Replaced the video from the suspended account with the video from Universal Sport’s YouTube account. That one, will not disappear.

LoseIt Fitness App Review Reach Your Fitness Goals!

By: In: Health and Fitness, Information Technology, Media, Non-Fiction, Off Season, Reviews, Writing

LoseIt the App

LoseIt the App

Every year many of us resolve to get our weight down and our fitness level up. To help with those goals we join gyms, subscribe to food services, and purchase equipment. One piece of gear I find indispensable is the phone app LoseIt. I find using this phone app makes it easier to achieve my fitness goals.

LoseIt — My Fitness Story

input your own data

Input your Particulars

I write this as a user of Loseit as well as having tried many other similar applications. Years ago I used the app Diet and Exercise Assistant with good results, but since that app is not ported to the Android system (PalmPilot and IPhones only) I had to leave it behind. When I used Diet and Exercise Assistant I lost about 15 pounds solely on watching my diet. If you have to choose between diet and exercise to lose weight, choose diet first.

When I was young weight loss was not a problem but gaining weight was. I could eat twice as much as my friends and not gain an ounce. While that is good when it lasts eventually that phase of one’s life ends and can lead to weight gain when your metabolism slows down. In the years my weight crept to above normal to entry-level obese. I reversed the trend once or twice but weight gain reasserted itself.

I am now about 35 pounds off of my top weight of 250 pounds last spring and would like to lose about 25 more pounds.

LoseIt — A Summary

your caloric budget

LoseIt Shows Your Caloric Budget

LoseIt is a standard diet and exercise tracker. You can obtain it for free and then you input your basic information (birth date, sex, height, etc) and your goals (what weight you want to attain and when) and LoseIt computes your daily calorie budget. You can also specify extra calories to remove from the budget, which I suggest doing.

Then whenever you eat you input the food and the amount you eat. Whenever you exercise you also input the type of exercise and the time and effort level. LoseIt then tracks the calories in and out and provides simple clear reporting on your caloric intake. You can easily view this data day by day and the app also provides simple reporting over a week. So if you break your budget one day it is easy to tell where you are over the week, think of your overage as caloric loan you have to pay back.

What is Wrong with the Photograph?

what is wrong with the photograph

What is Wrong with this Photograph?

Question, what is wrong with the above photograph? I took this photograph at Monarch Ski Resort my only ski trip outside of the Midwest region. I am fond of this photograph most notably the perspective but every time this photograph comes up as my background on my work workstation, I cringe.

Why do I cringe? What did I do wrong? Can I repair this photograph? If so, how can I? Do not worry, I know what is wrong and how to fix it, but I want to hear what you have to say.
