Product Review in the Works

By: In: Equipment

Yes, I have been solicited to demo, test, and review a ski gear product! I accepted (I’m easy that way folks) and the product arrived today, and so far the expectations are way exceeded. The product is out of the box, but not the plastic bag. I’ll start to remove it when I have more access to time and better photography conditions. Then I’ll put it on a backdrop to photo it.

I guess this product being my first will undergo a number of reports. I suppose the first will be the basics on fit, style, appearance, and a first review of comfort. Yeah, you can tell already it is an article of clothing.

When the first part of the review comes out I’ll let you all in on what the product is and the details. The product is an old ski clothing standby that has a new twist. The problem I face is the new twist needs some side by side comparison under colder conditions than we have now. In addition, I want to test this article while skiing, not just while strolling around my yard outside.

Ski Pass Defender

By: In: Equipment, Skiing, The Sharp Edge

Not too long ago I was “followed” by an outfit promoting a piece of gear you could put your RFID chip containing ski pass into (bigger resorts use RFID containing passes to expedite the process of checking your pass for validity prior to loading onto a chair). I don’t think that is a bad idea, especially for season passes. Any piece of paper, plastic, or what-have-you uniquely tied to you has the potential of leading to identity theft.

However, the folks at Ski Pass Defender seem to be more worried about the good guys than the bad guys.

Knowing Your Equipment

By: In: Equipment, Skiing

A lot of sports involve equipment or gear of some sort. Most of us who participate in such sports on a recreational basis often times do not pay a lot of attention to the gear we use, and if we do it is more for aesthetic purposes than for performance reasons.

Given we all have limited time and resources we have to pick and choose our areas of focus. If you participate in an equipment laden sport and want to perform at high levels then you need to pay more attention to your equipment, even if you are not going to advance to a professional or top level amateur leagues.

Nature’s Tug

By: In: Equipment, Skiing

Many imagine nature as only nurturing, but lets be honest, it can also be destructive. Many animals in addition to us, build structures to aid in survival and all such animals have to work to maintain those structures. One thing people new to house ownership quickly learn is the forces of nature conspire against them and work to reclaim the materials used to build the house. This results in an activity we call maintenance.

Putting the Skis into Hibernation

By: In: Equipment

Jason over at the Michigan Ski Report provides us with some instructions on putting our gear to bed for the summer. I am going to do that this year, normally, I wipe my skis down with a rag, put them in the bag, and then find an out of the way place to stash them, my boots, and my other gear.

Then in the fall, maybe, I would take my skis into a local shop and have the ski edges sharpened up and skis tuned. Well, I’ll be doing that, and I will start waxing them regularly too.

So far, we have laundered my outer wear and while my skis and boots are stashed in an out of the way place, I will definitely obtaining the gear suggested by Jason and putting my skis to bed properly.

Thanks Jason!

Our Ski Gear

Our Ski Gear

The top pair are my K2-3s, the middle pair are a pair of K2 4s my brother uses, and the bottom set is a set of K2 G4s my father skis on. My skis are 192 cm long and I am not certain about the length of the other two sets of skis.

Not that it is real great or anything, but I want to discuss it and my general approach to ski gear

My Camera Gear

By: In: Equipment

One of the things I am working on doing here is to get myself taking photographs again. When I graduated form college I received a Minolta Maxxum 7000i & an introductory lens as a gift. I went out with and starting snapping photos and started to become serious about the art.

Then a year or two afterwords I attended a lecture our local museum sponsored on photography. It was a basic lecture by a professional and he focused on exposure, then went into the basics of photographic composition, and then presented a quick overview of the photographic industry — namely stock photography.

Then I got a job teaching overseas.

End of Season Gear Deals

By: In: Equipment, Skiing

Now is the time to start looking for updating or upgrading your gear. For instance Zeller’s announced on Facebook they have just did their final markdown on 2010 winter gear. Zeller’s is in Green Bay.

Yesterday, I was in the Outdoor Outlet located in Appleton Wisconsin and they are also discounting winter sports gear.

Always, consider too the The Skier’s Outlet located near the Prime Outlets in Oshkosh WI. The Skier’s Outlet runs fantastic deals the ski season long, but they do get even sweeter now.

No need to be on the bleeding edge of ski gear, plus it is about skiing and not fashion! Go visit the above mentioned shops and tell them The Wisconsin Skier sent you!

It is not Your Equipment It is You

By: In: Equipment, Skiing, Technique

I can not remember when or where. I recall some ski instructor, or was it an author, or both? In any event, the fellow expressed disappointment that more people are not carving now that the equipment makes it easier.

Have you seen this phenomena anywhere else? I have.
