I went UpNorth this weekend and spent Saturday skiing.
I am not going to name the particular resort I was at, but if you read this site or spend some time reading this site you should be able to guess.
To set this up let me describe the weather last week. We have had a pretty usual winter so far (if a little late) where we get hit with some minor snows, a major snow, and then some warm weather with warm weather precipitation. We underwent the warm weather & rain phase starting in the middle of last week. At our home we we lost most of our snow cover looking out we see brown fields and grass and hay that was once bright green.
However, from Friday night to Saturday morning winter sanity returned to the region. Here is some data from Weather Underground showing some weather data from January 1.

As you may know the WI 2010 gun-dear season is underway. I spent Saturday in the woods, going from one spot to another trying to find a good place to hunt and a place far enough from other people. Incredible as it sounds, in the Nicolet National Forest that is not an easy thing to do. The forest is criss-crossed with logging and forest service roads, if you think you are in a far off remote spot, you may only be a 1/4 mile from a road and be subject to the presence of other hunters. Oh well, public lands, right?
Anyway Sunday the weather was lame with a fall of freezing drizzle, even the hardcore hunters in my party did not want to hunt that day. So we dilly-dallied around the cabin and eventually got up and went to Ski Brule to watch the Packer game.

Saw this going through my twitter account the other day:
Text BIGSNOW To 95495 To Win! Text BIGSNOW to 95495 for a chance to win an Indianhead Season Pass. http://fb.me/C6t57tBz
Also, while talking about it, Indianhead Mountain Resort Group is looking for 10,000 Facebook fans. GO become a fan! Oh yeah, if they hit the 10,000 number by November 1, they will sell discounted lift tickets on December 4th and 5th. It is real fun watching the resurrection of this resort. Go do it folks!

One story I have been following the last month or so is the attempts to bring Sugarloaf Mountain back into the ski business. Being I live West of Lake Michigan and Sugarloaf is on its East shore I am not following too closely but fellow ski writer Jason at the MI Ski Report has been following the story very closely.
Normally, one would think such a story would be rather uncontroversial, a fellow comes in and wants to buy the resort and bring it back into operation and business. That means jobs and income for people and not just at the resort but around the community. Not everyone will stay at the resort, people need gasoline and cola for the drive back home, and so on.
So what is the big controversy surrounding the possible resurrection of Sugarloaf Mountain?

Over at the Michigan Ski Report on the Fall Line Blog Jason notes:
As an individual that grew up skiing in Northern Michigan, including Sugar Loaf, I have been considering a post on the subject for some time now and didn’t feel inclined to write about it until the most recent article was posted by the Traverse City Record Eagle on Saturday. It appears as if another investor is interested in purchasing the dilapidated resort in the hopes that they can turn it around. I’m optimistic about the whole concept of Sugar Loaf making a comeback, I just have a hard time understanding how and when.
Sugarloaf Mountain is near Frankfort Michigan which is in the Northwest corner of Michigan on Lake Michigan straight across and a little North of Algoma Wisconsin. One can expect Sugarloaf to be the beneficiary of lots of lake effect snow.
As you can tell from Jason’s quote the resort has been non-operational and he presents some photographic evidence of the ghost-mountain nature of the resort.
