Skiing for Richer or Poorer

By: In: The Last Ride

Not too long ago I saw a note referring the reader to a website on tips to ski cheaply. That note triggered a thought stream and the river flows out of skiing on the cheap to how skiing is popularly thought as an activity for the rich but also as one for the dirt poor.

That is, the super-affluent entertaining at their elaborate ski lodges in Aspen or the ski bum on the edge of living out of their car. At least that is generally the image portrayed in films.

The Anticipation

By: In: The Last Ride

A special early edition of The Last Ride.

I hate anticipation, but what is life without anticipation?

I hate anticipation because it is essentially wishing your life away, but let me tell you I’m looking forward to carving things up. Anticipation also takes away from the enjoyment of the here and now or at least it may take the focus you need here and NOW to get the things you need to do here and NOW.

Caring

By: In: The Last Ride

Sad story comes from Big Bear Mountain in California:

The incident began when Lukacik apparently injured himself while snowboarding.

“We were told that Bryson apparently fell off the ski lift and hit his head, but no one knew it until they saw a big lump on his head,” said Stars Assistant General Manager Kelly Ritayik. “Later in the day, we found out he collided with another snowboarder or a skier.”

Disoriented, Lukacik talked about going surfing the next day. He later asked where his bed was, but instead of remaining at a vacation cabin, the 22-year-old dashed into the night to find a way back to his San Diego County residence.

“We were told that people with head injuries like this can have a one-track mind,” added Ritayik. “So everyone is assuming he’s trying to come home to his own bed-but he doesn’t have any money or his cell phone.”

Very sad (source from The Ski Channel Television Network), and leaves one to wonder not just about this situation but others.

Lots of Sunshine

By: In: Off Season, The Last Ride

On Sunshine

The Sun's Amazing Impact on Life!

One thing I definitely do not like about ski season is the lack of sunshine. I do not get real depressed or anything during the winter, but the summer sunshine is very much appreciated. I would say the winter can be a sunny season too, just not for very long. I appreciate a nice sunny winter day, but the fact that is dark by 5:30 pm is not so much appreciated.

What is worse is gloomy and cold spring weather, that type of weather can put a real damper on my mindset.

Our language contains a lot of references to the fact we prefer sunshine.

Ski Dreaming

By: In: The Last Ride

From time to time I dream of skiing. I am not talking of day dreaming, but about night dreams.

It is one thing to day dream of something, but to night dream of it is different. Last night I had a ski dream, I always wake up from these thinking I am a better skier than I really am, or perhaps the dreams are closer to reality than I give them credit for.

The Seasons of Sounds

By: In: The Last Ride

Those of you who live in locations having four distinct seasons know that certain sounds accompany each season

Some of the sounds are natural being made by animals, insects, birds, and some are man-made. Usually, they arrive suddenly and without warning and just as usual they slowly and unnoticeably fade to nothingness.

There is a Time

By: In: The Last Ride

Fellow Daily Crusher Debbie stopped by and left the following comment:

That last paragraph of yours got me to thinking. I’ve been working on trying to live in the moment. Your analogy really describes how I use to live most of my life. Worrying about that last hill back home. Thanks for the food for thought. Have a great day!

This was in response to my post on Bicycling. In it, I noted that I have no problem riding out on the trail near my house, because it is all a gradual grade downhill. The trip back is uphill so it is more difficult than the trip out. I play a little mental game when riding the return leg and that is I imagine myself at the next road and not at home. This makes it easier and provides me with a mental boost.

Most should recognize what I am doing, I am dividing the task into smaller and easier to accomplish tasks!

Get Outside!

By: In: The Last Ride

I find there are a number of different activities many skiers like. Obviously most of them are outdoor activities, if the cold, snow, and winds of Winter do not keep us from skiing we will surely find as many reasons we can to be outside during the summer. I am sure I am not the only one that goes crazy being confined inside all day when it is sunny and pleasant outside. I will find any reason to be outside. Watch the grass grow was a common reason last summer.
