The Badgers Win! YEAH and MEH!

By: In: Media, Non-Fiction, Writing

Last Saturday evening the University of Wisconsin (football) Badgers won a close game against the Michigan State (football) Spartans. The game was close the whole way through with the Badgers and Spartans trading leads and momentum. Again it was a last minute ending, ending on what appeared to be a Spartan punt return for a game-winning TD (or close enough). However, a Spartan defender ran into the punter and the Badgers got the ball back and assumed the victory formation to seal the win, the first Big 10 championship (new format), and a berth to the Rose Bowl. Yeah for the Badgers.

The two games these teams played this year show them to be evenly matched and the difference being chance events.

Now for the MEH part.

The Endorphin Express

By: In: Media, Skiing, Writing

The Wikipedia starts off on its entry on Endorphins by stating:

Endorphins (“endogenous morphine”) are endogenous opioid peptides that function as neurotransmitters. They are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus in vertebrates during exercise, excitement, pain, consumption of spicy food, love and orgasm, and they resemble the opiates in their abilities to produce analgesia and a feeling of well-being.

Emphasis added and Wikipedia footnotes removed by yours truly.

Sometime ago I referred to drug use as a shortcut to pleasure. The Wiki I quote above strongly indicates our very own bodies produce opiate like substances to help our bodies cope with stressful situations — namely strenuous physical activity. When God was forming us (Open up God’s toolbox and in it you see evolution) it became apparent that humans need to bust their @$$e$ from time to time and that endorphins helped us through those times. Whether it was hustling across the African savanna chasing an antelope down, hustling down the road to make spot X before your adversary, or splitting a cord of firewood; those who can squirt out a bit of endorphins probably did better at it and actually may have even come to crave the exertions.

The Grateful Dead — Why?

By: In: Media, Non-Fiction, Writing

Steal Your Face righ75t off your head!

Nothing Left to do but Smile Smile Smile!

One recurring item of discussion you see me engaging in is the music of the Grateful Dead. I think anyone who has been around a bit knows the Grateful Dead are not on the top of too many people’s playlists. I can only think of few people outside the circle of my family and close friends who seek out Deadly music.

There are a number of reasons I have come to like the Grateful Dead and for some of you reading this I have to tell you to seal your assumptions in the silver mine!

Turn Quest — Part I

By: In: Fiction, Media, Writing

Note: What follows below and under posts entitled Turn Quest are works of fiction. Any resemblance to characters living or dead is likely but unintentional. I don’t know how many installments will make up the story, but I hope enough to be a small novella (a novelita?).

Turn Quest

Jim had a hard time getting sound sleep. It was 3:52 am and Jim’s nose was long numb to Sally’s perfume and the lingering odors of romance. He was restless and turned his head over and studied the silhouette of his sleeping wife. The essential shape was there but muffled by the thick wool quilt that kept them warm. His study was interrupted by the thoughts of the busy day in front of them and their departure on a long awaited trip. He kept wondering if he really needed to perform all of the errands on the list and how to complete them as soon as possible.

It was a long time since Jim and his family took a grand trip and since the children were now out of diapers at least they would not have that problem, but of course older children meant other hassles. Stopping for frequent bio-breaks, threatening to stop the car on a regular basis, feeding the kids, and putting up with the Are we almost there yet? question (and he put the over/under for the first instance of that question at 20 minutes of driving into a 18 hour trip). They had books, a list of games to occupy the children’s attentions, and plenty of children’s snacks and drinks on hand. However prepared they were he knew there would be problems and only he among the four was expected to bear hardships calmly and patiently.

The Tahoe they owned was just in the garage for maintenance, a checkup, and tire rotation. Still the vehicle was well aged and the checkup did not involve any diagnostic surgery. It could be the waterpump is on the verge of breaking, the fuel pump might be ready to pump its last gallon, or who knows what else could unexpectedly go kerput? Still, he thought that is always the case even on a short trip to buy a case of beer or a loaf of bread; to worry about such things is useless and dropped that thought and returned to the his wife’s sleeping silhouette and faded to sleep.

The Twit Employee

By: In: Site Related

No, this is not talking of bad employees or colleagues, I am talking of having employees involved with your social media program. Not an employee or employees who run(s) it, but employees from other areas of the company.

Recently at my current client their featured intranet article was on their need for employees to refrain from participating in their social media conversations. The article said following or liking was okay, but not to participate in discussions. This shows the client takes that feedback seriously and wants it to be genuine grass-roots and not AstroTurf.

More on Twitter Followers

By: In: Site Related

The other day I wrote a post on on how my attitude on Twitter followers has changed with time.

This article elicited some favorable feedback so I oblige my readership and explore this some more. The tool I have used most recently is called Twitter Karma. Twitter Karma has a pretty decent interface on showing you who follows you, who you follow, and mutual follows.

As I said in the last post, I no longer automatically rfollow. I look at the person following and evaluate on a number of my interests, goals, and the overall value of that person.

A Confession

By: In: Site Related

If you have a blog or ever dabbled in blogging you know how blogging for bucks makes gardening in the desert seem easy. It is not that easy and ad-revenue is tough to earn. In fact, my experiences indicate the more I write the less revenue I earn from the advertising.

So, when I came across a post today, passed on by a friend it noted that blogs and writing should not be your main product, that your blog should support some sort of product or service of real value to people. I like to think my writing is a real product, but I know better I am not going to be winning any prizes for my writing.

In fact…

For Love of Skiing

By: In: The Sharp Edge

I Corinthians 13:1-3:

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

What the h-e-double hockey sticks is a Biblical passage doing here for? Especially, when I have used the Church Lady as an epithet?
