More Blackjack Slush Cup Action

By: In: Media, Photography, Skiing

The set of photos below come from Blackjack at their 2010 Slush Cup competition (much writing has come from this day). While I did not capture it, the snowboarder gets completely out of the pond and lives for the next round. Still, amazing stuff!

Number one of four.

Looks Bad, huh?

Number two of four

Getting better

Midwest Friendly Ski Talk

By: In: Resorts, Skiing

Is to be found here in a post entitled Three Different Ski Regions to be Aware Of over at SkiSnowboarder dot Com:

2. The Midwest. Most people don’t view the Midwest as skiing country, but cold-weather states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are built for winter sports. Maybe other events like snowmobiling and icefishing are a little more popular, but there are plenty of opportunities to find good winter skiing in the Midwest. The Midwest is also home to some large population centers, so you don’t have to stray too far from large airports to go on a great skiing trip.

You know, I have had a few things to say about this!

Helmet Review

By: In: Equipment, Skiing

Giro Seam Helmet

I have never skied with a helmet. That changed last weekend.

In my years of skiing I have crashed many times and only once did I get a blow to head and it was on hard pack, but the blow was not too hard. I checked myself for concussion and seems to me the fact I did that means I was not concussed.

However, from time to time we ski on literal ice and crashing on those ice patches could cause severe trauma to one’s head. Not to mention the possibility of catching an edge just long enough to send one into the trees or similar mishap

Columbia Omni-Heat Titanium Review

By: In: Equipment, Skiing

Time to refresh my Facebook skiing photo

I will be wearing a new ski jacket this season and you should consider it too! I recently obtained a Columbia Sportswear Company’s Omni-HeatTitanium ski & snowboard parka.

Columbia's Omni-Heat Titanium Ski Parka

This review is going to focus on the non-performance aspects of the jacket, that is style, fit, features, and comfort. How it performs in the wintery outdoors is a writeup I am going to submit to you later.

Celebrity Deaths — STOP IT!

By: In: News, Skiing

I am seeing a lot of blog postings & alerts along the lines of:

  • So & so was killed skiing/snowboarding in Europe
  • So & so was NOT killed skiing/snowboarding in Europe

What appears to be going on is unscrupulous people are posting these stories and getting a burst of traffic from the BS rumor post or the denial story. Yesterday, it was a famous comedian/singer/actor today it was another actor whose name I did not recognize.

There was supposedly a rumor going about the death of a famous singer but she did not die (though reputable reporting does note she is gravely ill and the story does not involve winter spor). What irritates me the most is the stories are tending to center on skiing or snowboarding, there is enough reality along those lines we don’t need to add on with fiction. Please knock it off, and please don’t click on the links for the entire story, whether rumor or denial of rumor.

Hot Tub Time Machine Review now fully open.

By: In: Skiing

My full review of Hot Tub Time Machine is now completely open. I password protected it and gave out the password as a spoiler. That password protection is now removed.

I figure most of you have seen the movie and if you have not seen the movie you don’t mind having certain aspects of the movie revealed.

Back in the Blackjack

By: In: Resorts, Skiing

I skied at Blackjack last weekend. This was the first time I had been back to Blackjack in sometime, I would guess the last time I was there was in the 2007/2008 season. Last season Blackjack lay idle, looking for a new owner.

Boarder performs a 180 coming out of the pond

COOL TRICK!

This boarder is exiting the pond! He went across the pond and spun a 180° turn on exit, you see him completing his turn and landing it on solid snow. Very very cool!

Well, my brother bought tickets for my father, himself, and myself and last weekend we collected on that purchase.

The Philippine Ski Federation

The Philippine Ski Federation

The Philippine Ski Federation

Being we are all pumped up about skiing and paying attention to Erol Kerr of the Jamaican ski team (actually the Jamaican ski team) a buddy notified me of: The Philippine Ski Federation (PSF).

From the PSF website:

Philippine Ski Federation has been a member of FIS (Federacion Internacionale de Ski – the world governing body) since 1999. Currently, PSF participates in two to the 9 disciplines under the FIS, namely alpine skiing and snowboarding. Also currently, our athletes and coaches come from United States and Canada. We are the only country, without snow, that consistently sends snowboarders and skiers to the World Cup and World Championships for the last 5 years. Truly we are unique as a people and a country!

This is very cool, now I need to find a way I can support this effort!
