More Ski Wisconsin Commentary

By: In: News, Skiing

From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

Every February, Will Andersen heads west for a week of serious skiing at one of the top resorts in Utah’s Wasatch Range, where he’ll carve turns on runs that drop from lofty summits around 11,000 feet down to base areas more than 3,000 feet below.

“Wisconsin is where I live and ski most of the winter,” says Andersen, who dwells in rural Dane County and is retired from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “I know that some people who also live here but disdain skiing in the Midwest. Not me.

I have commented on this copiously here, but what alternative is there? Yeah, the slopes are not as long, steep, numerous, or fast. However, the speeds experience in my comfy chair are less thrilling yet! So, I ski here when I can and enjoy it and enjoy being with my family, friends, and fellow skiers.

Get out there folks!

Midwest Friendly Ski Talk

By: In: Resorts, Skiing

Is to be found here in a post entitled Three Different Ski Regions to be Aware Of over at SkiSnowboarder dot Com:

2. The Midwest. Most people don’t view the Midwest as skiing country, but cold-weather states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are built for winter sports. Maybe other events like snowmobiling and icefishing are a little more popular, but there are plenty of opportunities to find good winter skiing in the Midwest. The Midwest is also home to some large population centers, so you don’t have to stray too far from large airports to go on a great skiing trip.

You know, I have had a few things to say about this!

Why Stay Here?

By: In: The Last Ride

Why do we stay in Wisconsin? Obviously you all know I am die-hard ski fan, and Wisconsin is in no way a place for skiers to thrive. Why not move to Colorado, Utah, or out to the Eastern ski locations, so mountain skiing is a regular event and not a ever few years event?

Why?

It isn’t career or professional, that is for sure. In fact, I bet moving to Colorado would be a great career move too. Not that my professional situation is bad, it isn’t, but it can be improved upon.

I suppose having built a new house may have something to do with it. We are working on completing year #4 in this house and most financial advisers will counsel you should be in a purchased house for five years, plus the current real estate markets may have made that span longer.

Wisconsin? You know, I like Wisconsin’s northern region, we have a place we can go to UpNort in the woods on the water. Apart from that, there is not a whole lot special about WI. I hesitate to go any further down this line as it is an edge catch and veer off into territory I don’t want to talk about in this venue. However, those same factors probably will come bigger to the fore in the states I have in mind.

Family? Yes, that is it. I am fortunate in that I have a tight family and for many of my friends and colleagues I know how rare and precious that is. I do not want to be too far away from my family and the friends I have made.

I have spent six years of my life resident in a nation other than the USA and I know the world has a lot on offer, but my family is here in WI.

The Wi Ski Map is Back!

By: In: Site Related, Skiing

The Wi Ski map is back! However, it is not back 100% and I have a basic map up with a smattering of ski resorts placed on the map. However, this is a huge improvement as it will be much easier for me to add and remove ski resorts to the map.

As time goes by I will be adding more pins to the map.

See the map!

Snow — Now a Four Letter Word

By: In: Skiing

Even a couple of weeks ago I would have been okay with snow, as a skier I like it and I believe winter should be — winter.

Over the night of April 7 and into April 8, we received snow and when it was done the total amount came to about 4″. It will not last long.

Upnorth

By: In: Off Season

People from Wisconsin are not the only ones to use the phrase Up North, but it seems like for us it is not so much a phrase as it is an idiom. A typical Friday conversation might go like: So Jeff, what’s up this weekend? (answer) Oh, not much, just headed Upnorth. Of course, in and of itself Up North does not mean too much and is a relative term at least among differing folks.

If I were headed to Green Bay for instance, I would not say I’m going Up North but plainly state I’m going to Green Bay. Technically there is nothing wrong with saying I’m going “Up North” when going to Green Bay, as Green Bay is North of our residence.

So what do we mean when we say we are going Upnorth?

Midwest Ski Film Festival

By: In: Skiing

In the past, I noted my discovery of the Midwest Ski Film Festival and in that post I stated:

I am intrigued by this. However, I do have one reservation. I fear the show is only going to be showing people ripping it up down nearly impossible powdered steeps and spectacular wipeouts. I understand, the films are being made by those wanting to break into the larger film industry and are showing their talents at the technical aspects of film making. However, I do not need to see one more video of some dude ripping up a mountain to heavy metalish music nor am I particularly keen on seeing montages of ski wipeouts. Ahem, those have been done before.

Recently Brian Landrigan contacted myself about the MWSFF, and it is worth reading his response.

Skiing in Wisconsin

By: In: Skiing

I am the Wisconsin Skier and there is an irony to that title. The irony is I spend most of my skiing time in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. In a sense, it might have been better to tag myself as The Michigan Skier. However, I do not cheer for Michigan or Michigan State but Wisconsin.

However, recently I did ski in Wisconsin and not too far from my residence. That experience will form the basis for two reviews the first a review of the Nordic Mountain Ski Resort and the second was the Skier’s Outlet — WVBO bus trip to Nordic Mountain Ski Resort.

Those Whacky Wisconsin Skiers

By: In: News, Skiing

One story that is really cluttering up Twitter is this:

A scene more suited to an episode of “Cops” played out late Monday afternoon at Tyrol Basin Ski & Snowboard Area in Mt. Horeb, Wis. According to Associated Press reports, Nicholas A. Pontillo, 24, of Lake Villa, Ill. [emphasis added], was arrested for allegedly trying to steal an ambulance from the ski-area parking lot.

This is the second story of this year arising from a Wisconsin ski resort. I am quite sure, this one will turn up on Stories of the Strange and similar news outlets. I will get back to you tomorrow on that!
