John L was going to accompany us, but he injured himself and could not join. He was going to take the plane to Kalispell and the plan was for him to pick us up at the Amtrak station. Yeah the time is a legit cost one needs to weigh. Fortunate for us the Columbush station is only a couple of hours from our house.,

Dave, thanks for reading and commenting!

I've considered the train on several occasions, and every time I've looked at it (e.g., from Chicago) it's pretty unappealing. The cost is typically in the range of $400 round trip for coach accommodations, and it's scheduled 34 hours each way. It may be nominally less expensive than flying in to Kalispell ($600-700 IIRC), but it would cost me at least two additional days off work & away from family.

I think it would be a neat way to travel -- in fact I still remember taking the train from Chicago to Denver on family vacations as a kid -- but the cost/benefit just isn't there for me.
