In reply to <a href="https://www.wi-ski.com/apres-ski/upnorth/#comment-157">sws</a>.

Hey SWS,

Yeah most of my Upnorth time is over by Eagle River and that is quite busy and crowded during the summer. Even over on the lake it seems crowded, we'll see people walking up & down the road, driving in and out every day we do so. When we go up during the winter time it is very different, the only people we see up there is our neighbor and that is no big deal since we we all have been very close friends since meeting him.

Looking at the map I would definitely agree Clam Lake fits into my definition of being Upnorth. It is in the Chequamegon National Forest and is in fact north a bit of Big Sand Lake (near Phelps). It appears you are smack dab in the middle of the national forest and we are on the eastern edge a lot of the time we have to be a mindful of where we are so we don't walk onto private land, but if we drive a bit that worry is much reduced.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

Hi Mark
If you know where Clam Lake Wi is, consider that as Upnorth. At least I would. That's where our 'cabin on the lake' is, and I cannot get there often enough. I'd give some opposition to your comment regarding the crowdedness of Upnorth during the summer months. Even with the attraction of the Elk herd since '95, I've seen the area completely void of people even on July 4th weekends. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not complaining, but it can have detrimental impacts on the local businesses. Obviously, somewhere like Minocqua is different with it's weekend warriors, and some may question whether that trap is truely the northwoods, but fuel prices and our economic downturn have really impacted beautiful little towns 'Upnorth.'
