Sugarloaf Mountain is a ski resort in Michigan (in Michigan proper, not the part stolen from Wisconsin) and has not operated since the year 2000. The resort in 2010 was the was the target of a purchase bid that failed to acquire the ski resort. Why did it fail? Hard to say but apparently the leader of that effort had some problems with a similar failing venture.
Well, this time Mr. Smith succeeds in acquiring Sugarloaf Mountain. There is some skepticism regarding Mr. Smith, I say the skepticism is in order but for projects of this magnitude that is always a good idea. The press release has a few things of note:
Mr. Smith and partners have purchased the property for an undisclosed price. The purchase includes all assets of Sugar Loaf to include property, buildings, ski lifts, and all existing inventory. Combined with adjoining land, the resort totals over 560 acres. The property boasts a private aircraft landing strip. Sugar Loaf is adjacent to golf courses, townhomes and residences that make up the community.
Liko Smith plans to transform the resort into a 560-acre Snowboarder’s Mecca titled The RoK at Sugar Loaf. Smith has partnered with internationally experienced snow resort operators interested in long-term development projects in the United States. The partners plan to open the resort by November 27, 2014.
There is a skeptical audience Mr. Smith and his partners need to win over and I wish them the best! The Wisconsin Skier always celebrates the opening or reopening of snow resorts!
